What is Coach SuperVision?

EMCC Global defines supervision as: “a safe space for reflective dialogue with a practicing supervisor, supporting the supervisee’s practice, development and well-being”. Supervision is a place where a coach can:

  • reflect on personal strengths and development areas within their range of professional competencies
  • be supported to maintain well-being and psychological health
  • explore and address the development of their competence, capacity and professional identity
  • discuss ethical dilemmas
  • view their practice from different perspectives
  • explore the direction in which they wish to develop their role and professional practice
  • develop skills as a reflective practitioner

And here’s the bonus, supervision can also be fun! 😀 Good supervision is something you should look forward to as a coach. I once heard someone describe it as like a regular spa treatment for coaches. While I can’t promise you’ll feel like you’ve been to a day spa, I can say that as your supervisor, I am committed to making sure you feel heard, supported, encouraged, and inspired.

Whether you are an experienced coach or just starting out, I’d love to be your supervision partner.

Benefits of Coach SuperVision

Coaching supervision offers invaluable benefits to coaches working both inside organisations and in private practice. For internal coaches, engaging with an external supervisor ensures objectivity, provides a confidential space free from organisational pressures, and helps navigate unique challenges such as boundary management and maintaining ethical standards. An independent supervisor offers a safe environment to discuss complexities openly and receive impartial feedback and support.

For coaches practising independently, supervision brings an outside perspective, ongoing support, and fresh insights. It serves as a vital source of encouragement, helping to address practice issues through robust reflective practice, learning and development.

Solo entrepreneur coaches, in particular, benefit from a dedicated thinking and reflection partner, supporting their well-being, continuous performance improvement, and ultimately enhancing client outcomes and preventing feelings of isolation.

Studies show that regular supervision can help coaches achieve:
  • Increased well-being
  • Deeper self-awareness
  • Improved effectiveness
  • Ethical decision-making
  • Professional growth
  • Professional standards

FAQ

Yes, I am a fully qualified and EMCC-accredited coach supervisor (ESIA). I have completed a 7-month intensive ESQA-accredited coach supervisor training program with Solutions Academy in addition to further supervision training.

My qualifications, skills and coach supervisor experience has been assessed and approved as being competent as a coach supervisor. I also have over 10 years of experience providing coach supervision in various settings.

My rate for coaching supervision is £150 per hour (+ VAT), but I also offer a sliding scale fee system to support the democratisation of coaching and access to supervision.

I no longer offer in person coaching or coach supervision. All services are delivered remotely via Zoom or by telephone if you prefer.

Coaching supervision sessions are typically one hour long. Some supervisors however offer 45, 60 or 90 minute supervision sessions.

Absolutely! If you are looking for a supervisor it’s a good idea to have a preliminary call to see if you are a good fit. I offer a free, no obligation half-hour call where we can get to know each other and see if we are a good fit.

Likewise, if you are seeking a coach supervisor for your team, I would be delighted to meet with you and your team to see if we are a good match.

Yes, coaching supervision sessions are confidential in accordance with the Global Code of Ethics and the EMCC Global Coaching Supervision Guidelines

The frequency of supervision depends on individual needs and professional development goals. A typical frequency for coaches in regular supervision is monthly,  quarterly and ‘as needed’. For example, if facing an acute ethical dilemma you might reach out to your supervisor to arrange an ad-hoc supervision session.

As an accredited coach with any of the main coaching bodies, guidelines are often provided for the amount of coaching supervision you should have each year. Check with your accrediting body for their recommended supervision schedule. The EMCC for example, requires accredited coaches to have 1 hour of supervision for every 35 hours of coaching.

No, your coach supervisor does not sit in on your coaching sessions. Coach supervision is a reflective and supportive partnership not a judgemental and disciplinary relationship.
